$150k Performance PHEV Dilemma: Polestar 1 Or BMW i8 Roadster?

If you have $150,000 to spend on a brand new car, chances are the 2021 Polestar 1 and 2020 BMW i8 Roadster aren’t on the top of your list.

If you want to go green, though, without sacrificing performance, but don’t wish to jump on the all-electric bandwagon just yet, those two plug-in hybrids start to make sense.

As the first-ever production car of Volvo’s newly-founded performance brand, the Polestar 1 is a technological tour de force that starts at $155,000 in the United States. For the money, you get a beautifully-styled coupe that packs 619 HP and 737 lb-ft (998 Nm) of torque from a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine assisted by a pair of electric motors and a 34 kWh battery pack. As a result, the Polestar 1 does the 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 4.2 seconds and can travel for 60 miles (96 km) on electric power alone.

It sounds impressive, but for roughly the same amount of money you can get the mid-engined BMW i8 Roadster, which has “only” 369 HP but offers similar performance thanks to its lightweight construction. Not to mention that the i8 looks like a concept car that has just driven out of an auto show.

If you have this first-world dilemma of which car to choose between the 2021 Polestar 1 and 2020 BMW i8 Roadster, the following comparison review from Throttle House might help you make up your mind. Or not, because the video does not choose a winner, leaving you to decide what you would do with your (real or hypothetical) $150,000.
